That’s the promise of ChatGPT Pulse — a new feature now rolling out to Pro users, and for many, it represents the boldest shift yet in how we interact with AI.


What Is Pulse — and Why It Matters

Until now, ChatGPT has been fundamentally reactive: you ask a question, and it responds. Pulse rewrites this script. Instead of waiting, ChatGPT quietly “thinks” overnight, leveraging your memory, past chats, feedback, and (optionally) connected apps like Gmail and Google Calendar to proactively generate curated updates.

Each morning, you receive a handful of visual “cards” — short, glanceable summaries — that you can expand, save, or use as a launching point for deeper tangents. OpenAI frames these as a first step toward transforming ChatGPT into a more assistant‑like entity — something that works for you, even when you’re not prompting it.

Pulse is currently a preview available only on mobile for Pro users. In the coming months, OpenAI intends to expand access to Plus users and eventually more broadly.

Pulse can become smarter if you allow it to read your calendar or email. These connectors are off by default and must be explicitly enabled. Importantly, OpenAI claims the data from these connectors will not be used to train the underlying models for other users.

Safety & Scope Limits

Because a proactive system raises risks (e.g. echo chambers, unwanted suggestions), Pulse applies layered safety filters to avoid surfacing harmful or policy‑violating content. Also, Pulse is intentionally bounded — it delivers a finite set of updates each day and then stops. The goal: avoid the “endless scroll” trap.

In demos, Pulse has shown intriguing promise. It generated ideas for group Halloween costumes based on a user’s family context. For someone training for a race, Pulse surfaced route adjustments and rest tips; for a traveler, local dining recommendations aligned with dietary preferences. Pulse has also pulled forward follow-ups on conversations you had, suggested next steps, or reminded you of incomplete tasks.

One early user noted Pulse identified that they had returned to their college town and proactively brought up developments there over recent months — something they hadn’t asked for but found interesting.
